South Africa
Although known as one of the New World wine countries, South Africa's history with winemaking goes back to the mid 1600's. As well as their own plantings, immigrants from France also settled around this time and planted their own vineyards.
Fast forward a few centuries and there has probably never been a better time to explore the wines of South Africa; quality has been improving continually over the past few years in both red and white wines.
As well as the obvious Chenin Blanc (also referred to as Steen) other whites are now outstanding with Sauvignon Blanc being used to produce lively, zesty wines that rival the style found in New Zealand. As for the reds, there is South Africa's own Pinotage (a cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsault) which offers light and brambly styles through to fuller, elegant food wines as well as great examples of some of the noble varieties like Syrah and Merlot.
