Portugal
Wine production in Portugal has undergone a huge transformation since the death of Antonio Salazar and the fall of his ‘Estado Novo’ in the 1970s. Funding from the EU has been used both in the vineyards and the wineries to improve standards of production and greater care is being taken to reduce yields and improve quality.
Although much of the wine produced here is based in the Douro, the home of Port, we have found a modern little co-operative down on the Setubal Peninsular which produces wines with both indigenous grape types such as Casteláo and Fernao Pires as well as blending with noble varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Chardonnay.
Wine is also produced in the Algarve where we’re all going on a summer holiday…
