New Zealand

New Zealand has established itself as a world leader in the production of Sauvignon Blanc, with its best known area of production being Marlborough in the South Island. Besides this well known style of white wine, it is also worth noting that fine Chardonnay and Riesling is also being produced as well as good quality Merlot and very much improved Pinot Noir.

Although New Zealand is a fairly young producer of wine, it is already in danger of over-planting and over-production. Many new plantings of Sauvignon Blanc have arisen as a result of people trying to jump on the bandwagon of success. Recently, this has resulted in a glut of unused grapes which have been bought very cheaply (in some cases by the big supermarkets) and turned into cheap wines. The danger of this is that it will cheapen the New Zealand brand and people will expect to be able to buy cheap Kiwi Sauvignon forevermore. If the New Zealanders are not careful, they will suffer in the same way that the Australians did in the late 1980’s when the same thing happened with their Chardonnay and this very nearly crippled the Australian wine industry. Still, there will always be the sheep…
