Germany

German wine is much underrated by many of us in the UK, although the German producers must take some blame for this as they are the people responsible for the bulk produced medium-sweet very average stuff that we used to drink. As our tastes have changed, we no longer find this style of wine as acceptable as we used too.

But (and it’s a big but folks!) Germany does produce some of the finest white wines in the world. Most of these wines are made from Riesling and range from dry through to sweet, depending on when the grapes are picked. And when they are well made, they are food friendly and have great balance and good levels of fruit and supporting acidity.

For starters, try the Deinhard wines and for something really special, the wines from Schloss Johannisberg will prove a real treat!
