Chile's climate as about as good as it gets in terms of wine production. Add to this the a long ripening season and plenty of water for irrigation from the snowmelt of the Andes as well as the lack of phylloxera and you have pretty ideal conditions all round.

Chile's commercial wine production dates back to the mid-nineteenth century when a wealthy middle class grew to love all things French. The newly rich desired Bordeaux style wines and so plantings were made of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc to try and 'copy' the wines of Bordeaux.

Since the fall of General Pinochet in 1989, there has been much overseas investment both in plantings and in modernisation of the wineries. Subsequently, wine production has improved and Chile is now the most important exporter of wines from South America.

If you are just starting out on wine tasting and want to know what the characteristics of single grape types are (i.e. Merlot, Chardonnay or Cabernet Sauvignon), then Chile is not a bad place to start.
