Bulgaria
Bulgaria may well be one of the oldest wine producing countries in the world. It is thought that wine was produced around the Black Sea area by the Thracian civilisation which itself dates back to 2000BC.
Over the last 60 or so years, Bulgaria’s wine industry has been through many changes. During the communist rule, the industry was exporting large amounts of wine and was generating a good income for the country. Bulgarian Cabernet Sauvignon was the top seller amongst red wines in the UK by the late 1980s but this changed fairly rapidly; as the communist infrastructure collapsed, so did that of the wine industry and, consequently, there was a vast and very quick decline in sales.
More recently there has been outside investment in Bulgaria’s wine industry and quality is on the up. This is shown by the two wines that we currently stock; a great quality Cabernet Sauvignon and a superb Chardonnay that would both command higher prices if they were from the New World.
