Australia
Australia is widely regarded as the most successful wine producing country in the New World. One of the key reasons for this success is the simplicity with which the wines are labelled; if a bottle of Australian wine is made from Chardonnay, then the label will carry the word 'Chardonnay', likewise with Shiraz, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc and so on. This has lead to consumer confidence in selecting bottles of wine from Australia and other New World countries as people have come to recognise the names of certain grapes as a wine type that they have tried before and liked.
Great marketing, but are the wines that good? On the whole the answer is yes and, in some cases, outstanding. However, it may have been difficult to say the same 15 or 20 years ago when the floodgates to the UK market opened and we were nearly drowned in badly oaked Chardonnay!
Like most wine producing countries, there is the mass produced low end that isn't always the best but, in certain areas such as the Barrossa, Eden Valley and McClaren Vale there are pockets of land that have the soil and climate that are ideal for producing wines with great character and finesse.
Some of this success does seem to be dwindling slightly and data from the Australian Wine and Brandy Corporation shows that in 2008 export volumes plunged 11% to 698m litres, the first fall since 1995. And with shortfalls in production in recent vintages, it is becoming increasingly difficult for the Aussies to keep their competitive edge.
Many regard this as a temporary glitch however and expect sales to pick up again over the coming years.
