Argentina

Argentina's wine-making began in earnest in the latter half of the nineteenth century when many Europeans (including Spanish and Italians) emigrated to Argentina and began planting vines.

The majority of vineyards were planted in the lees of the Andes mountain range, very often at altitudes of 500-2000 metres above sea level. This altitude gives cool nights and hot days which enables the fruit to ripen slowly and fully and produce some excellent wines.

Argentina has made two grapes its own so to speak: Malbec, which produces full bodied fruity reds, and Torrontés, which is usually a dry, aromatic and floral white. Cafayate, where Michel Torino is based, is considered to be the home of the Torrontés grape.

The other thing Argentina is famous for of course is Maradonna's left hand...
