Although there have been wild vines growing in the North America since before the Norsemen arrived, it was not until the arrival of European immigrants in the earlier part of the nineteenth century that the industry started developing. All 50 of the states in the USA now have vineyards, although many of these areas do not produce wine of any particular note.

The USA produces many world class, much sought after wines with the main areas of production being found in California, the Pacific north-west and New York State. Our main focus comes from Mendocino County in the north of California and includes the inevitable Zinfandel.

The Zinfandel is like many things that are produced in America – big! Chunky and full of fleshy red fruit the Zinfandel always has that extra kick of spice and pepper along with a woody character from the oak barrels in which it is usually aged. In fact, it could be likened to the governor of California himself – full of muscles and ever so slightly wooden…
